About Shapefile Converter

Free, private file converters for people who work with maps: surveyors, foresters, land planners, GIS students and anyone who needs to move data between Google Earth, QGIS, ArcGIS, GPS devices and spreadsheets.

Why this site exists

Most online GIS converters upload your file to a server, strip attributes, ignore folders and hand back a shapefile in the wrong projection. We built this site to do the conversion properly and to do it on your own device.

Nothing is uploaded. Every converter runs as JavaScript in your browser. Once a page has loaded it works without a network connection, which matters on slow mobile networks.
Attributes are preserved. Placemark names, ExtendedData, Schema fields and the HTML tables that ArcGIS and QGIS hide inside KML descriptions are all turned into real fields.
Correct coordinate systems. Shapefile output can be WGS84, Web Mercator or the correct UTM zone for your data, always with a proper .prj and a UTF-8 .cpg file.
Mixed data handled. Points, lines and polygons are split into separate layers, folders can become separate layers, and polygons with holes and MultiGeometry are written correctly.

How the conversions are checked

Every conversion direction has automated round-trip tests: a file is converted, converted back and compared to the original with coordinate differences below one ten-millionth of a degree and every attribute value equal. Shapefile, KML, KMZ, GeoJSON, GPX and CSV output is additionally validated with GDAL, the library behind QGIS.
